Husband allegedly shoots and kills wife in Taunton, police investigating

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE)- Police surrounded a house in Taunton on Sunday night after a woman was shot in the home’s driveway.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said that 71-year-old Dianne Silveira was shot in the driveway, allegedly by her husband, 86-year-old Edmund Silveira.

Crews from the Taunton, Raynham, Norfolk, and Massachusetts State Police departments were all dispatched to the 800 block of Bay Street at 8:55 p.m., after hearing reports of gunfire.

Upon arriving, they found Mrs. Silveira shot in the driveway, according to Taunton Police Chief Edward Walsh.

She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she died at about 9:20 p.m.

Mr. Silveira had barricaded himself in the home by the time officials arrived at the scene.

Officials used a tactical robot to enter the home and found that he was unconscious.

He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with what police believed to be several self-inflicted knife wounds on his neck and wrists.

According to The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Silveira is expected to stay there for “a few more days.”

On Monday ABC6 went back to Bay St. where we spoke with Peter Menard, who went to church with the couple.

“I was going to church at Saint Jude’s and they would be there every morning them two for daily mass,” Menard said.

Menard just saw Edmund Silveira two weeks ago and adds the two were inseperable.

“They were always together though, always together.”

Mr. Silveira is being charged with assault and battery by means of a firearm while police continue to investigate.

Silveira will not be arraigned until he is mentally cleared.
