Shots fired in Providence neighborhood for second time in a week

Providence Police are investigating a shots fired incident on Dorchester Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Providence.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Providence Police are investigating a shots fired incident on Dorchester Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Providence.

Witnesses told ABC 6 they heard several shots ring out, but they came outside to find no one was there.

Police on scene were seen picking up shell casings amongst the parked cars.

According to Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare, this latest incident began with a dispute between people in two separate cars.

One of the groups of people allegedly fired a gun at a nearby home which belonged to someone who was in one of those vehicles.

Pare noted there has been a lot of gun violence in the city in the last two weeks, including shots fired into a car on the street over from Dorchester Avenue this past weekend.

Pare said he does believe this latest incident was targeted.

Police tried to gather information from witnesses at the crime scene with help from Mayor Elorza, who lives around the corner and was helping witnesses translate for police.

ABC 6 did ask Mayor Elorza if he’d like to say anything to residents given how violent a day it’s been in the city, but we were referred to a city spokesperson.

Police are actively investigating this incident but say it’s too early to tell if this was related to an earlier shooting and a fatal stabbing at the Providence Place Mall.
