Site of Pool Drowning to Stay Closed For Rest of Summer

The Lafayette Park Pool in Fall River will stay closed for the rest of the summer, after it was drained to assist in the drowning investigation of Marie Joseph.

After only four days of operation this season, the pool was ordered closed on June 29th, after Joseph, 36, was found to have drowned in the pool. Her body remained on the bottom of the pool for two days before rising to the top, hidden by cloudy water.

To make up for the lost resource, the Fall River YMCA on North Main Street will be open to the public four days a week, from Friday to Monday each week.

Also, beginning August 17th, and running through September 3rd, bus service from Fall River and Westport to Horseneck Beach in Westport will be free.

The bus locations for the free shuttle service to Horseneck Beach will begin at the Borden Street terminal. Stops will be made at Lafayette Park, the Prince Henry Monument on Eastern Avenue, and on Route 6 in the Narrows area of Westport, before heading to Horseneck Beach.

The shuttle runs will begin at 9:00am, 11:00am and 1:00pm each day. Buses will leave the beach at noon, 2:00pm and 4:00pm each day.

The bus service is being provided by a grant from the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

A grant is also being provided to the YMCA.
