PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A changing of the guard is taking place in Providence Monday.

Mayor-Elect Brett Smiley will be sworn into office Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Providence Public Library.

Smiley is taking over for mayor Jorge Elorza who has served as the city’s top politician for the last eight years. Elorza was term limited.

Smiley defeated councilwoman Nirva LaFortune and Gonzalo Cuervo in 2022’s election to take over the post as mayor.

Prior to becoming mayor, Smiley was a top aid for former Gov. Gina Raimondo, serving as her chief of staff and director of the Department of Administration.

Also, Monday new leadership is coming to the Providence City Council as Rachel Miller is poised to be named the next council president.

She will be taking over that position from John Igliozzi who did not run due to term limits.
