Smithfield HS cancels upcoming football game; Homecoming game to be monitored

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) -Smithfield High School has officially cancelled the upcoming football game, amid a COVID-19 outbreak in the school.

The school says at least 15 of the cases in the school are in students on the football team.

Daniel Kelley, the high school principal, says at this time no changes have been made to the Homecoming game next Friday night.

The school tells ABC6 the reason Homecoming has not been yet been impacted is because the game has been cancelled. If the game was pushed back that would have impacted next week’s game.

“We will continue to monitor the health of our football team over the coming days,” Kelley says.

This is a developing story, check back for details.
