Smithfield looking into controversial 7-foot-tall fence

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) – The town of Smithfield was looking into a controversial fence built on a yard because of one man’s privacy concerns with his neighbor on Wednesday.

According to Michael Erbe, he put up the nearly 7-foot-tall fence, because his neighbor had a security camera facing toward the side of his house with two bedrooms.

Erbe told ABC6 News he repeatedly asked his neighbor to move the camera, but that neighbor refused until Erbe took down the fence.

Erbe said even if he took down the fence, he didn’t trust the neighbor would remove that camera, which he alleged was facing his bedrooms.

A building and zoning official said, on Wednesday, the town had been looking into the fence for several months, to see if the fence met state and town code.

The official expected to have an answer by this week.

ABC6 News was unable to reach Erbe’s neighbor by the time this article was posted.
