Smithfield officer on DUI detail hit by suspected drunk driver

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A Smithfield police officer who was parked in his cruiser on a DUI detail was hit by a driver Saturday morning.

The accident occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday on Douglas Pike in Smithfield.

32-year-old Derek Lewis, of Pascoag, was arrested and was faces multiple charges.

Police say both cars were severely damaged that they had to be towed from the scene.

The officer was treated for minor injuries. Lewis, however, was not injured.

Lewis’ charges include:

  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test
  • Refusal to Submit to a Preliminary Breath Test
  • Expired Vehicle Registration
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Evidence of Insurance
  • Reasonable and Prudent Speeds and Laned Roadway Violation

He is set to appear in Kent County District Court September 12th.
