Sousa’s Big Day At The Plate Lifts Syracuse Past PawSox
Pawtucket Red Sox Press Release
Pawtucket, RI – Starter Danny Rosenbaum tossed 6.2 shutout innings and centerfielder Steven Souza drove home five runs as the Syracuse Chiefs shut out the Pawtucket Red Sox, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon in front of 3,025 fans at McCoy Stadium to avoid being swept in the three-game series.
Rosenbaum (1-1) allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out five and hitting two batters. The lefty did not allow a hit until Corey Brown's two-out single in the fifth inning.
Souza opened the scoring in the top of the first with a one-out RBI single against Pawtucket starter Anthony Ranaudo (0-1). Zach Walters led off the second with a triple to center and scored the second Syracuse run on Brian Goodwin's RBI groundout.
The Chiefs blew the game open on Souza's three-run home run in the third against Ranaudo, the first long ball of his International League career. Souza added a broken-bat RBI single in the seventh against reliever Rich Hill that made the score 6-0.
Ranaudo allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. Hill and Dalier Hinojosa each allowed one run in relief. Manny Delcarmen and Ryan Mattheus finished the shutout by combining to allow three hits over the final 2.1 innings for Syracuse.
Souza finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk, home run, one run scored and five RBI. Brock Holt (single and hit by pitch) was the only PawSox player to reach base multiple times on the afternoon, as Pawtucket was held to just five total hits.
The PawSox next head on the road for the first time this season, beginning an eight-game trip Thursday night with the opener of a four-game series at Buffalo. Thursday's opener is scheduled for a 6:05 pm first pitch, with PawSox right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (1-0, 0.00) starting against Mets lefty J.A. Happ on an MLB injury rehab assignment. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 5:50 pm.
