Southcoast Health opens vaccination clinic in Fall River, first of three in MA

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) – Southcoast Health opened its first of three vaccination clinics in Fall River on Monday.

The site is located at The Liberal Club on Star Street, and around 400 people over the age of 75 were vaccinated there on the first day.

Southcoast Health public information officer Shawn Badgley said another site will open in Dartmouth on Tuesday, and another in Wareham on Wednesday. He said they plan to administer 2,700 doses each week across the three locations.

What makes Southcoast Health’s clinics so special is that you don’t need to be a patient to get an appointment.

“You don’t have to have a Southcoast PCP, you needn’t have had any encounters with Southcoast in the past,” Badgley said. “We are doing everything in our power to vaccinate as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.”

People don’t even need to be from Massachusetts either. Badgley said Rhode Islanders are welcome, as long as they either live, work, study or get healthcare in Massachusetts.

“Being here today is just fantastic. Patients are super happy, we’re able to get them vaccine and we’re thrilled to be able to do this for the community,” said Debbie Dupont, R.N. “It’s hope. We’re able to provide hope to our patients and to our staff, so, it’s exciting.”

Those getting their first doses Monday said they felt as though they’d won the lottery.

“It was just like a flu shot,” said Monica Mello of Tiverton. “(I’m) so lucky. I guess it was a random type pick, you know, like a lottery. I got a call, email last night. I couldn’t believe it, I was shocked.”

Southcoast Health is using a lottery system when contacting eligible people, reaching out at random to people in their database to register for an appointment.

“It was a text saying that it was open, so we made the appointment and that was it. It felt good. Felt good. You know, I was waiting, it finally came through so one more to go,” said Adeline Esleeck of Middletown.
