BOSTON, MA—The
Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato from the
New York Mets to complete the August 14 trade of catcher Kelly
Shoppach.  Beato has been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.  In order to
make room on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison was
transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Beato,
25, began the 2012 season on the disabled list due to right shoulder
stiffness.  The right-hander appeared in seven games for the Mets this
season, all during the month of July, including five scoreless efforts.
He has a 10.38 ERA (5 ER/4.1 IP) with five strikeouts, five hits
allowed and two walks with New York and is 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA (17
ER/37.0 IP) and 27 strikeouts compared to 11 walks in 24 games (1 start)
for Triple-A Buffalo this year, including six on rehab.  He opened the
year with three rehab outings for the club's High-A Port St. Lucie
affiliate.  Beato began his Major League career tossing a Mets
franchise-record 18.2 innings without an earned run in 2011.  Originally
selected by the Orioles in the supplemental round of the 2006
First-Year Player Draft, he has a 2-1 record with a 4.67 ERA (37 ER/71.1
IP) and 44 strikeouts in his Major League career over the last two
seasons, all with New York.

Atchison,
36, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 15 (retroactive to
July 14) with a right elbow strain  The right-hander went 2-1 with a
1.76 ERA (9 ER) in 37 outings out of the bullpen this season.  He fanned
34 batters with just nine walks over 46.0 innings.  In 150 career Major
League appearances (1 start) over parts of six Major League seasons
with the Mariners (2004-05), Giants (2007) and Red Sox (2010-12),
Atchison is 7-7 with one save, a 3.57 ERA (81 ER/204.1 IP) and 162
strikeouts compared to 59 walks.
