Spencer the Boston Marathon dog passes after battling cancer

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Boston Athletic Association said farewell to a friendly, furry face last week.
The group announced the passing of Spencer, the golden retriever that became an icon for holding his “Boston Strong” flag in the same spot near Ashland State Park for nine years.
Spencer’s family said after multiple battles with cancer, they realized he wouldn’t make it to the 127th running of the race.
Spencer the marathon dog was named the official dog of the Boston Marathon and an honorary canine ambassador by the BAA last year.
A portrait was dedicated to Spencer to keep his memory alive.
His family said he was able to make it to the 2021 and 2022 races despite his previous health scares.
