WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE)- St. Benedict parish in Warwick will close in November and merge with St. Kevin parish, the Diocese of Providence announced Sunday.

The Diocese cited a decline in parishioners and sacramental activity as reasons for the parish’s closing.

St. Benedict is set to permanently close on November 17.

“While the loss of a church building is a significant change, in this case I know that this new configuration will strengthen the Church and will enhance the pastoral and spiritual care of Catholics in the area,” said Bishop Thomas Tobin.

The two parishes had been sharing one priest since 2017, according to the Diocese.

Attendance and sacramental practice had been declining since before the pandemic, the statement read.
