Man taken into custody after standoff in Westerly neighborhood

WESTERLY, R.I (WLNE) – Police confirmed a man has been taken into custody after a standoff in a Westerly neighborhood.

Manuel Valles, 57, barricaded himself in his home for about four hours on Thursday.

Police say Valles was “screaming, yelling, and giving orders to everyone in the neighborhood from a second floor window.” Valles was found by police throwing items out of windows and knives and swords at the officers.

Police say he is known to authorities and has a history of PTSD and mental health issues. They threw gas grenades into the house to try to make him leave.

Authorities entered the house and apprehended Valles without incident and was transported to Westerly Hospital for treatment.

His wife and adult child have been relocated because of extensive damage to their house, making it uninhabitable.

This is a developing story, and more details will be added as they become available.
