PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The state is kicking off a summer-long game aimed at getting children and parents outdoors and involved in more physical activity.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says its annual Great Outdoors Pursuit begins with a scavenger hunt and guided hike Saturday.
Saturday is also national “Kids to Parks Day,” a day of outdoor play organized by the nonprofit National Park Trust.
Participants in the scavenger hunt and one-mile hike will meet at 11 a.m. at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center and Bike Path in Lincoln. The events conclude at 3 p.m.
The pursuit is now in its 9th season.
Families earn rewards for participating in scheduled outdoor events throughout the summer. Participants register for free online and print a Pursuit Passport.
More than 1,500 people participated last year.
