PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Governor Raimondo was joined by Senator Jack Reed to introduce a new commercial construction workforce initiative Monday at the Statehouse.

They’re looking not only to fill jobs in the state, but to provide workers the skills they need to do those jobs.

“We’re responding to the business needs of our economy,” said Raimondo in a press conference Monday. “Businesses are saying we need to hire more in the construction trades, and we’re going to train Rhode Islanders so they can get a good job.”

Officials said the program will be modeled after the Electric Boat/Marine Trades Pipeline, supported by a $5.25 million grant Senator Reed helped secure.

The need for construction workers in comes at a time when the state is putting more focus on repairing its aging infrastructure and schools.
