State Police arrest Lincoln Town Clerk for misappropriation of town funds

LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island State Police announced the arrest of a Lincoln town and court clerk for misappropriation of town funds on Tuesday.

Major John Alfred said in a release that Monique Clauson, 55, of Lincoln, was arrested for unlawful appropriation over $1,000.

In October 2020, the State Police Financial Crimes Unit was contacted by Lincoln Town Administrator T. Joseph Almond, who was concerned about unexplained shortages in the town’s Municipal Court fine payments.

An investigation showed authorities that as the Municipal Court Clerk, Clauson was responsible for collecting traffic court fines.

State Police said Clauson allegedly diverted approximately $69,000 of court funds between 2011 to 2020.

Clauson was arraigned at the State Police Headquarters on Tuesday and released on personal recognizance. Clauson is expected back in court again on January 5.
