State police investigating death of toddler in brook after early-morning crash

CLARKSBURG, Mass. (WLNE) — Massachusetts State Police said they’re investigating the death of a young child following a crash early this morning in Clarksburg.

Authorities said they determined a two-year-old boy died after his father lost him in a brook while fleeing the scene of a car crash on foot.

Police said the crash happened just before 2 a.m. A state trooper who responded to the crash found the child in the Hudson Brook.

Fire and EMT officials attempted life-saving measures, the boy was later rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police determined the child’s father, identified as 35-year-old Darela Galorenzo, of Readsboro, Vermont, was under the influence and was taken into custody shortly after.

The Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office said Galorenzo remains in their custody at the Cheshire Barracks where he was charged with the following:

  • Manslaughter
  • Reckless endangerment of a child
  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Operating under the influence

He is being held on $100,000 cash bail.
