PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – The State Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would increase the hourly minimum wage to $11.50.

“With the costs of living rising each year while most people’s wages remain stagnant, it is important that we help our hard-working residents who are struggling to pay for daily living expenses for themselves and their families.  said Senator Lynch Prata (D-Dist 31) who sponsored the bill. “This raise in the minimum wage is a good step in ensuring that our residents have enough money to pay for a roof over their heads and put food on their table.”

The current hourly minimum wage is $10.50 per hour and was put into effect on January 1.

If the bill is passed by the General Assembly, the minimum wage would raise on Jan. 1, 2020.

The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.
