17 men faced a judge on Tuesday hours after being arrested by State Police in an organized crime internet gambling sweep.

45-year-old Thomas Pilderian and 39 year old Mark Battista said to be leading one of the two separate groups involved.

James Petrella, 31 and Timothy Moretti, 46 were said to be controlling the second operation.

Petrella was arrested in Narragansett at a home on Beach Row.

Moretti has known mob ties. Back in 2000, the Providence Journal reporting  the former ACI guard was tied to an illegal gambling ring that was led by known mobster Anthony "The Saint" St. Laurent.

The department released this statement to ABC 6 News.

"We were informed earlier today by Rhode Island State Police that an employee was arrested on charges unrelated to his duties at DCYF. Questions about the State Police investigation are more appropriately directed to State Police. While the charges are unrelated to his position at DCYF, we will conduct a thorough internal review.”
