EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) – An East Providence family has been forced out of their home for the holidays, after a two-alarm fire broke out Friday morning, causing heavy damage.

The blaze started just after 7 A.M. at a home on Sheridan Ave. in East Providence.

“It was a crazy thing to watch,” said Kyle Fernandes, who lives next door.

“I was very concerned for my neighbors.”

Three adults, three children, and a cat were safely evacuated from the home, which suffered extensive structural damage.

“It’ll be a while before they can move back in,” said East Providence fire chief, Oscar Elmasian.

One neighbor says she is already raising money and collecting Christmas gifts for the displaced family.

State Fire Marshals are still investigating what caused the fire, but say it appears to have started in an upstairs bedroom.

The Red Cross is also working to help the family find temporary housing for the holidays.
