Male pedestrian seriously injured after being hit by vehicle
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) -- A man is in serious condition after he suffered life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a car in East Providence Monday afternoon.
Police said that they arrested the driver for a DUI.
Police markers and tire tracks were visible from the scene where the pickup truck came to rest on the grass after it hit the man was walking along the street.
Forbes Street near Hospital Road opened back up Monday night after an hours-long police investigation this afternoon.
Police were called to the accident scene around 1 p.m.
They said the pickup was driving west on Forbes Street, crossed the center line and toward the sidewalk on the opposite side and then struck the victim.
Witnesses describe that victim as a man in his 20's.
They said he was actually dragged on the hood of that pickup before falling off.
The victim was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital for what are being described as life-threatening injuries.
The driver was arrested at the scene, charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
ABC6 spoke to one neighbor who described the frightening scene and the state of that driver.
Police would not say whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or both.
They expect to release the suspect's name late Monday night.
Notably, much of the sidewalk has not been cleared of snow, potentially making things even more difficult for that pedestrian.
City officials said clearing sidewalks is the responsibility of homeowners, but they do have 24 hours after the snow stops falling to do it.
