SEEKONK, MASS. (WLNE) - A dog from Seekonk could be named this year's "Top American Hero Dog".
His name is Mojo, and he's competing against hundreds of other dogs across the country for the designation.
The English Bulldog has saved his owner many times.
Michael Bruhn suffers from sleep apnea and when he forgets to put his mask on at night, Mojo will bark or jump on him if he hears him snoring, or stop breathing.
But he proved he is pawsitively a hero two years ago when he saved the entire family from a fire.
"He's truly been our saving grace in more ways than we can count," said owner Lee-Ann Bruhn.
His owner Michael Bruhn was recovering from an accident that left him disabled.
A side effect of his medication made him sleep walk into the kitchen in the middle of the night, and put food on the stove.
"The house filled up with smoke," recalled Michael. "Mojo found his way through the house, found me, jumped on the recliner with his two front paws, pounding on my chest, and barked until I woke up."
"He was there, and he saved us," said Lee-Ann.
Those actions and others led the Bruhns to submit Mojo's name and story to the 2019 American Humane Hero Dog Awards, and then they picked Mojo as a Hero Dog nominee.
"I said, you know, I got to pay this guy back," said Michael.
Mojo will now compete against 360 dogs nationwide, as a part of the shelter category, to prove he is truly man's best friend.
"Definitely was brought to us to help Michael," said Lee Ann.
"It was meant to be," said Michael.
