WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (WLNE) – A Fall River man was arrested on drug charges Monday night after fleeing the scene of a highway crash.

Massachusetts State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 24 southbound near Exit 15 around 11:00 p.m. Monday.

State Police said troopers arrived on scene to find the driver, 20-year-old Anthony Viverito of Fall River, sitting in the vehicle of a Good Samaritan passerby.

They said Viverito was tightly clutching a black bag, and was acted nervously.

When troopers attempted to escort Viverito to a cruiser so the Good Samaritan could leave the scene, Viverito fled into the woods and dropped the bag.

State Police said the bag contained over two ounces of marijuana packaged for resale, as well as a bag of hallucinogenic mushrooms and a pill bottle containing 17 Xanax pills.

K-9 troopers searched the woods and located Viverito around 1:00 a.m. A baggie containing suspected Fentanyl was found in his immediate area.

Viverito was arraigned Tuesday in Brockton District Court on the following charges:

  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class A Substance
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class C Substance
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class C Substance
  • Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class D Substance
