WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Islanders will soon have a new, tropical destination to get away to from their local airport.
In a press conference Tuesday morning, Sun Country Airlines announced their first international destination from T.F. Green: Punta Cana.
“Today we announce a great new international route that will benefit the airport, Rhode Island’s tourism economy and Rhode Island’s strong and vibrant Latino community,” said Iftikhar Ahmad, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. “Rhode Island is home to thousands of Dominicans who will now be able to enjoy the convenience of traveling nonstop from T.F. Green Airport.”
City and state leaders were on hand Tuesday and praised the new flight not only as a vacation route, but a way to bring in new tourism.
“The addition of these flights, to the Dominican specifically, makes it easier for people across New England to visit family, enjoy vacation, promote their business, gain education and have cultural exchanges," Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza said.
A weekly seasonal flight to Punta Cana will start in November, and by Christmas time, Sun Country expects to have two weekly flights in and out of T.F. Green.
There are roughly 50,000 Dominicans living in Rhode Island; they make up about 5% of the state population and are the largest and fastest-growing Latino population in the state.
Flight tickets went on sale Tuesday, and services are set to begin in November.
In January, Sun Country first landed at T.F. Green, opening routes to Minneapolis and Nashville. They announced two more locations, Las Vegas and New Orleans, in April.
