TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) - A massive fire that destroyed an historic multi-family home in Taunton and left at least 11 residents homeless is under investigation.

Officials report no serious injuries from the blaze Tuesday night on Harrison Avenue, but some residents had to be rescued from windows or balconies.

Richard Gelinas told the Taunton Daily Gazette that he and his girlfriend were in their third-floor apartment when they saw flames through the window. He said they raced down one flight, kicked in the door to an apartment and jumped from a window.

Gelinas fears his cat died in the blaze.

Brittani Albanese told WPRI-TV that she and her mother were nearby when they spotted the fire. She said they broke a screen window to help one couple get out safely.

Tax records show the building dates back to 1845.
