Brown Men's Basketball Wraps Up Spanish Trip With Loss To FC Barcelona
Brown University Press Release
Barcelona, Spain – Brown men’s basketball concluded its 10-day, four-game trip to Spain on Thursday afternoon, dropping a hard-fought battle to FC Barcelona’s Liga Espanola de Baloncesto Silver Team, 79-70, in Barcelona. The Bears will fly back to the United States on Saturday.
Brown’s starting backcourt led the way from an offensive standpoint as both senior Brandon Anderson and senior Zach Hunsaker each scored 21 points each. Junior Tamenang Choh was the only other Bear in double figures with 12 points.
“I thought that we competed pretty well for the entire game and we put ourselves in position to win against a big and talented team,” said Brown head coach Mike Martin. “It was a really good challenge for us to finish the trip. We learned a lot about the group that we have and we are excited to add our newcomers in the fall.”
The game started off slowly for both clubs as points were at a premium in the first quarter. Anderson’s five first quarter points led the Bears, who trailed 19-14 after one.
The teams played to a 23-23 draw in the second quarter with Choh scoring 9 points in the frame to lead the Bears, who trailed 42-37 at the half.
The second half was an exciting exhibition of runs by both teams. After a Hunsaker triple cut the deficit to two at 46-44 with 5:35 left in the third, Barcelona called a timeout. It turned out to be a good one for the home team which proceeded to go on an 8-0 run to up their lead to 10 at 54-44.
However, the Bears closed the quarter with a flurry as Anderson and Hunsaker each connected on treys as part of a 9-2 run helping Brown pull to within three at quarter’s end, 56-53.
The Bears continued their torrid play to start the fourth quarter as Hunsaker rattled off six quick points as part of an 8-0 run to put Brown in front, 61-56, with 7:27 left, much to the delight of the strong contingent of Brown fans in the building.
An 11-0 run by Barcelona helped the home team regain the lead 67-61 with five minutes to go. A 7-2 run by Brown fueled by Anderson and George Mawanda-Kalema pulled Brown to within one at 69-68 with 2:25 remaining, but that was as close as the Bears would get. Back-to-back three’s by Barcelona sealed the victory for the home team, 79-70.
Brown officially opens the 2019-2020 season on November 5thon the road against intrastate rival Bryant University.
