PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Jim Langevin announced about $300,000 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help the West Warwick and Narragansett fire departments.

The Rhode Island Democrats say it'll help firefighters do their jobs safely and efficiently.

The West Warwick Fire Department plans to use $220,000 for training programs to provide officers with nationally-recognized professional certification training.

The Narragansett Fire Department plans to use $70,000 for a training program to help prepare newer firefighters for leadership and senior officer positions and purchase air monitoring equipment to detect hazardous gasses.

Rhode Island fire departments and first responders have received more than $40 million since 2001 through the grant program.
