PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE): A correctional officer at the ACI’s high-security facility was hospitalized after an inmate stabbed him, according to a spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections.

The officer was able to restrain the inmate until other staff arrived for backup.

The officer was taken to the hospital and then later released.

The inmate, David Catalano, is serving a life sentence for running down a gas station attendant and shooting a police officer in 2009.

According to police, Catalano hit and killed 66-year-old Clifford LeValley on Post Road in East Greenwich.

When North Kingstown police officer Troy Maiato caught up with Catalano at his North Kingstown home, Catalano grabbed Maiato's gun and shot him.

Maiato survived with only minor injuries, but Catalano fled in his police car and was arrested after a short chase.
