MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) - A Central Falls man died after he was fishing and fell from the rocks into the water at Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge on Tuesday morning.

Middletown Police were able to find Joaquim Almeida, 74, in the water with the help of witnesses at around 8:30 a.m.

Almeida was transported him back to Third Beach, then to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This area is known as a popular fishing spot.

"People come here to fish and often when you are on a path walking you see the fishermen coming down and going to the rocks,"  Katrina Heron, a Middletown resident, said. "We all say hello, and say did you get a good catch today? It's a very friendly, warm atmosphere. I feel as though we are all a community. It's terrible. We lost one of our own."

Police say the incident remains under investigation.
