RICHMOND, R.I. (AP/WLNE) - Police say a 78-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen at Wawaloam Campground by a 77-year-old man who later killed himself.

Richmond Police Chief Elwood Johnson says officers responded to the campground around 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police say Daniel Brown, 77, shot Maureen Smith, 78, three times in the stomach and the hand.

Brown fled the scene and killed himself. His vehicle was found nearby in Exeter after the shooting.

Police credited Smith who owns the campground for jumping out of a window to get away from Brown.

"She was attacked in her own home and she was able to escape through a window and run to her neighboring family's house where 911 was called,"Johnson said.

After shooting Smith, Brown tried shooting Smith's son but was unsuccessful , according to police.

Police say Smith was conscious and alert and identified Brown as the attacker before she was taken to the hospital. Smith told police that a dispute between her and Brown started after Brown was told he had to move out of the property.

"I can tell you that it wasn't a family, or dating or romantic relationship," Johnson said. "He clearly harbored resentment toward the victim and it was over a perceived dispute."

Smith underwent surgery and is expected to survive, according to police.

Wawaloam is a seasonal campground but also has year-round residents.
