Five Rams, Including Freshman Toppin, In Double Digits During Opening Night Win over LIU
Five players scored in double figures as Rhode Island opened the 2019-20 campaign with a 76-65 victory over LIU Tuesday night.
The top four returning scorers for the Rams - Fatts Russell, Cyril Langevine, Jeff Dowtin and Tyrese Martin - combined for 60 of Rhody's 76 points. Freshman Jacob Toppin was the fifth player in double figures, scoring 11 in his debut. Rhode Island led for the majority of the first half and took a 36-28 lead into the break. Langevine had nine points and eight rebounds in the first half, controlling the glass.
URI started off the second half on a 15-5 run to open a 51-33 lead. LIU was able to trim the lead back down to eight points with 4:48 to go, but a jumper from Dowtin extended the lead back to double digits and the Rams were able to keep the Sharks at arms length down the stretch. The victory was Rhode Island's seventh straight in season openers.

Senior Cyril Langevine had a stellar start to the season, recording 16 points and 15 rebounds. It was the 24th career double-double for Langevine, who had 17 last season.
Junior Fatts Russell scored a team-high 18 points and matched his career high with seven assists. He also had four rebounds and three steals. For Russell, it was the 14th time in his career he has had three or more steals.
Sophomore Tyrese Martin had 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. He also shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range.
Senior Jeff Dowtin had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Russell and Dowtin combined for 10 assists and zero turnovers. Dowtin played 37 minutes, while Russell saw 35 minutes on the floor.
Freshman Jacob Toppin had an impressive colleigate debut with 11 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Four of his boards came on the offensive end, and he blocked a shot on defense.
Freshmen Mekhi Long and Gregory Hammond made their collegiate debuts.
The last time the Rams had five players in double figures was Jan. 13 2019 against George Mason.
URI outrebounded LIU 52-38 and had 15 offensive rebounds.
As a team, the Rams had 18 assists and 10 turnovers.
The Rams will head down to College Park, Md. to take on No. 7/8 Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 9. Tip-off is set for 9:00 p.m. on FS1.
