TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) - Police are looking for a suspect connected to a hit-and-run pedestrian crash that killed an 85-year-old man on Wednesday night.

Police say they are looking for a GMC Sierra from model years 1999 through 2007. The pick-up truck may have minor damage to its hood and/or windshield.

Police received a call at 5:30 p.m. reporting a pedestrian hit by a car in the area of 305 Middleboro Ave. in East Taunton.

Police say Jose Ferreira, 85, of Taunton, was lying in the roadway when they arrived to the scene.

The driver drove off after hitting Ferreira, and has yet to be found.

Ferreira was taken to Morton Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Bristol County DA's office.

"When they arrived on scene they found an 85-year-old male in the roadway," said Lt. Eric Nichols of the Taunton Police Department.

Police called the road the main thoroughfare of East Taunton, but shied away from calling it dangerous.

"It's a well traveled road, not a significant amount of complaints for speeding or anything, but it is a well traveled roadway," said Nichols.

Some neighbors on scene disagreed with that, saying the street is known for speeding, and that this was an accident waiting to happen.

Investigators believe there are witnesses who were driving in the area of the crash at the time of the incident and are asking them to please come forward and contact police.

Police say even minor details could be helpful to investigators as they search for the driver responsible.

Anyone who has information about the incident or the identity of the driver is asked to call State Trooper Brock Morrissette at 508-961-1904 or the Taunton Police’s detective line at 508-823-5000.

Editorial note: The Bristol County DA's office on Wednesday told members of the media that they were looking for a gray SUV. That information was incorrect due to false information given by a witness.
