DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) - Crews battled a fire at a Salter's Point home in Dartmouth.

The Dartmouth Fire Department says the fire broke out late Thursday afternoon and the house is a total loss.

The house was owned for multiple generations by a family from the Boston area,  according to our sister station WCVB.

The family was not home when the fire broke out.

Firefighters battled really heavy flames when they arrived on scene and had to call for back up. The flames were so big and the wind was so strong that two neighboring houses were put at jeopardy of catching fire as well, according to fire officials.

However, quick work from fire crews were able to save the neighboring houses from any major damage.

No injuries were reported.
