The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management are asking residents to drop off their Christmas trees for a project that will support river habitats.

A statement on the agency's Facebook page calls for trees to be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, January 3 and Friday, January 10 at DEM Division of Fish & Wildlife’s Outdoor Education Office in Exeter.

The trees will be used in "upcoming projects to restore river habitats by reducing erosion and creating refuge habitat for fish, turtles, and other aquatic organisms."

Those looking to donate their trees should "remember to remove all bags, tree stands, decorations and lights."

The project is a partnership with the conservation nonprofit Trout Unlimited.
