Supreme Court rules in favor of same–sex marriage Nationwide
History is made Friday, as the Supreme Court rules in favor of same–sex marriage Nationwide.
Newlywed’s Dave Burnett and Larry Bacon, say it’s a dream come true.
“Honestly, I never thought it would occur in my life time,”says Burnett.
The outcome is the culmination of two decades of Supreme Court litigation over marriage, and gay rights generally.
The couple joined a large crowd at Roger William’s National park to celebrate the ruling.
“What I think about this day, is families. Little kids whose two mommies, two daddies, finally have the recognition they deserve,”Says Bacon.
While gay marriage has been legal in Rhode Island for more than two years, supporters say now, equal rights across the board are what they’ve been waiting for.
“It’s taken us 20 years, but the fight went on even before that, but now it is the law of the land,”says Kate Monteiro, a participant in the celebration.
Not everyone agrees with the court’s ruling, Bishop Thomas Tobin issued a statement saying, “A thousand courts may rule otherwise, but the very notion of “same–sex marriage” is morally wrong and a blatant rejection of god’s plan for the human family.”
He’s calling on Catholics to defend what he calls authentic concepts of marriage and family.
Despite those who disagree, burnett and bacon say this is a day they will cherish forever. Burnett says,“When I think back on my childhood, never did I imagine that someday I would be walking down Westminster st. Hand and hand with my husband.”
