20-Year-Old Man Charged in Providence Shooting

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in a shooting that happened around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

Providence Police have not yet identified the man, or the victim.

The man, police say, faces seven felony charges and one misdemeanor for allegedly shooting a man in Dorrance Square around 3 a.m. on Sunday, January 29. According to Providence Police Detectives, the man was already a convicted felon in Massachusetts.

Detectives say he was apprehended on foot shortly after the shooting happened, down the street from Dorrance Plaza where the shooting occurred.

Police recovered a 9 millimeter Luger handgun from the scene, the gun allegedly used by the man. Detectives say the gun was stolen about ten years ago, and was the one used in the crime.

Police also say two men witnessed the shooting, and that their information was key in identifying the alleged shooter.

The victim, who Providence police have not yet identified, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he remains, according to police.

The victim's condition is unknown at this time.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The alleged shooter will be arraigned in 6th district court on Monday, January 30.
