The suspect, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, of Lexington, SC, was taken into custody in North Carolina.
Officials say 9 people are dead including the churches pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, in the shooting that happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.
The suspect was seen leaving the church in a black four door sedan, police say.
Police Chief Greg Mullen says the shooting is being called a hate crime. The FBI and state police helped in the search.
