PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The suspect charged in connection with a murder over the weekend in Providence is a National Guardsman, ABC6 has learned.

Family told ABC6 that 21-year-old Troy Ingram, charged with the murder of a 41-year-old man at a Jewett Street apartment, is a member of the Rhode Island National Guard.

Police were called to an apartment at 123 Jewett Street around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, finding the body of Mohsin Muhammad, 41, who they say worked at a nearby convenience store.

Police said they believe was killed by blunt force trauma, describing the scene as “gruesome.”

It’s unclear at this time if there was any sort of relationship between Ingram and Muhammad.

Ingram was arraigned Tuesday morning in Providence District Court and ordered held without bail.

His family said that Ingram is a Hope High School graduate and that they don’t believe he committed the murder.

Police say this is the 8th murder of the year in Providence.
