Suspect due in court for Coventry break-in and assault

COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) – Police have arrested a man from West Warwick involved in a break-in and assault of a pregnant woman.

Police are charging 47-year-old Joseph Cevoli of breaking and entering and simple assault after he forced his way into the home of Vanessa Lachance and assaulted her on Monday afternoon. Her young son was also in the home.

Police say Lachance was instrumental in finding and charging Cevoli. He was arrested yesterday as she was able to identify him in a photographic line up.

The home security camera caught Cevoli in the act and the surveillance video led to numerous tips from the public.

Lachance said, "It was instant fear. especially because my son saw him and he screamed and started crying and all i could think was ‘please leave, just leave, just get out of here.”

Lachance was able to lock herself in her son’s room and call the police after Cevoli shoved her by the face.   

Cevoli has a crminal past dating back to 1987 and he’s been arrested more than fifty times for robbery, burglary, theft, and narcotics.

Cevoli’s will be arraingned at Kent County District Court Thursday morning.
