UPDATE: Suspect in custody in fatal Westport hit-and-run

WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) – The suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Westport in early May has turned himself in, Police confirmed Wednesday.

Gerardo Lugo, 54, of Fall River, is in custody awaiting arraignment after turning himself in around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for his role in the death of 30-year-old Stephanie Tripp in a hit-and-run on Old Bedford Road on May 7th

The suspect vehicle in the crashes, a gray BMW, was located and seized in Fall River after police received an anonymous tip.

Investigators searched Lugo’s Cherry Street apartment and located the keys to the suspect BMW as well as a plastic bag containing approximately 200 grams of suspected heroin.

Lugo faces the following charges:

  • Leaving the scene-death resulting
  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Trafficking heroin in excess of 100 grams

He will be arraigned Thursday morning in Fall River District Court.
