Suspect linked to fatal Attleboro stabbing arrested in Providence
ATTLEBORO, MASS (WLNE) – A woman from Weymouth was arrested on Sunday in connection to a double stabbing from Friday afternoon that killed one woman and injured another.
Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office, Attleboro Police, and Rhode Island State Police took 20-year-old Kayla Cantu into custody in Providence for a connection to a stabbing that killed 28-year-old Kimberly Duphily.
According to the Bristol County D.A’s office, Cantu and a few others were staying at Duphily and her husband’s apartment at 6 Leroy Street in Attleboro. Shortly before 4 p.m., a fight had broken out outside of the apartment between Duphily and Cantu. Cantu allegedly slashed Duphily’s husband in the face, and at some point in the altercation, Duphily was stabbed twice.
Cantu fled the scene, and hid in bush before running towards Bicknell Street, where she approached a police officer working a detail. She allegedly told the officer she had been stabbed at 6 Leroy St. Although Cantu did sustain knife wounds, authorities say that the wound was likely due to the knife slipping in her hand.
First responders arrived to Leroy Street and found Duphily suffering from stab wounds and rushed her to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Massachusetts State Police, Attleboro police, and Rhode Island State Police took Cantu into custody Sunday afternoon.
Cantu was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. She was arraigned Monday and ordered held on $25,000 bail.
According to the D.A’s office, the investigation into the homicide and the circumstances surrounding it are still actively being investigated.
