Suspects in fatal Newport stabbing ordered held as bail violators

NEWPORT, R.I (WLNE) – Two teens charged for the fatal stabbing of a Little Compton man at a house party in Newport will remain behind bars.

Tyrese Poulsen, 18, has been charged with murder after police say he stabbed 22-year-old Maximus Julian in the neck at a house party on Thames Street early Sunday. Julian died from his injuries Tuesday.

Jamaal Reid, 19, has been charged with harboring a criminal and disorderly conduct for his role in the stabbing. Police said Reid and Poulsen were involved in a fight with Julian before the stabbing occurred.

In Newport District Court Thursday, a judge ordered the pair held as both are bail violators. Poulsen was out on bail on a charge for carrying a pistol without a license, and Reid was out on bail for charges including identity theft.

Detectives in court said a witness told police Poulsen confessed to stabbing Julian after getting into their vehicle after the crime. The group drove to Newport Heights, and then Reid and Poulsen fled to New York.

They later turned themselves into police.

A second person was injured in the stabbing, suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

Both will be back in court on June 15.
