SUV Crashes into Wall at Breakers Mansion; 4 hurt

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – An SUV has crashed into a wall at Newport's
famed Breakers mansion, and four college sophomores are seriously
hurt.

Newport Police Lt. William Fitzgerald says four 19-year-old students at Salve Regina University were in the car early Thursday. The crash is being investigated, but Fitzgerald says it appears the vehicle was going too fast. He says it's not clear whether alcohol was involved.

Police say the driver, Michael Canning of Massapequa, N.Y., has broken ribs and internal injuries.

University spokeswoman Kristine Hendrickson says his injuries are “extremely serious.” All four are still at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Christopher Wands, of Port Washington, N.Y., has two broken legs. Christopher Connors, of Garden City, N.Y., has a broken pelvis and leg, and Ian Cadzin of East Rockaway, N.Y., broke his
leg.
