HARPSWELL, Maine (WLNE) A woman is thought to be the victim of a fatal shark attack in Maine, the Maine Marine Patrol said in a statement on Facebook Monday evening.
Authorities said eyewitnesses described seeing the woman attacked by a shark.
The woman had been swimming near Bailey Island, an island in Casco Bay that is a part of the town of Harpswell.
Witnesses in kayaks brought the woman to shore where she was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel.
The incident continues to be investigated, the Maine Marine Patrol said.
Boaters and swimmers have been urged to exercise caution in the area, and to avoid swimming near seals or schools of fish.
The Portland Press Herald reported that there has only been one recorded incident of an unprovoked shark attack in the state, according to shark researcher Dr. James Sulikowski.
Sulikowski told the newspaper it was likely a white shark responsible for the fatal attack.
