A portion of Veterans Memorial Parkway in East Providence was shut down Thursday morning as police tried to negotiate with a sword-wielding man who barricaded himself inside his home.

Police say the 66-year-old man was wielding a sword inside of his Delway Road home when his roommate woke up and heard him making threatening statements.

The concerned roommate called police around 6:30 a.m., and when crews arrived they found the suspect locked inside of his bedroom with the sword.

Police tried to negotiate with the man and eventually called in a SWAT team and crisis negotiators. After an hour of talking through the bedroom door, police decided to introduce tear gas through the bedroom window.

The suspect was then forced out of the bedroom, taken into police custody and sent to the hospital. Criminal charges are yet to be determined.

Police shut down the portion of Veterans Memorial Parkway surrounding Delway Road for about an hour out of concern for safety of cars driving by.
