TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) – A Taunton man was seriously injured Monday night after he was bitten multiple times by an attempted shoplifter.
Surveillance video shows 19-year-old Joel Davila biting a clerk on the arm and face during a struggle at the Sunoco station at 231 Broadway late Monday night.
Police said the attack occurred around 11:25 p.m. Monday night after the clerk tried to stop Davila from shoplifting from the convenience store
Police said the victim, a 55-year-old Taunton man, was profusely bleeding from a gash below his left eye when officers arrived on scene. He was transported to Boston hospital with serious injuries.
Davila was held at a local hospital overnight before being arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Maim and Mayhem.
“The actions of the suspect represent an attack of an innocent worker just doing his job and trying to prevent the theft of merchandise from his place of employment,” Said Taunton Police Chief Edward Walsh. “I would like to commend the good Samaritans who were in the store at the time and helped the victim while preventing this dangerous suspect from escaping and possibly harming others.”
According to police, Davila had been known to shoplift from the Sunoco station in the past.
Davila was arraigned Tuesday and is being held without bail.
