Providence (WLNE)- A 47-year-old Taunton man has been sentenced for sexually assaulting an intellectually disabled minor, the Bristol County district attorney announced today.

Christopher Dewhurst received a 12 to 15 year sentence after pleading guilty to charges of “assault to rape a person under 16 and three counts of indecent assault and battery on an intellectually disabled person,” according to the statement.

Dewhurst had been left to care for the victim and her siblings in October 2017 while the victim’s mother was at dinner with friends.

The mother returned to find Dewhurst naked in a bed with the victim.

Police were called to the scene and a subsequent investigation found Dewhurst’s DNA in saliva on the victim’s breast and underwear.

In addition to the prison time, Dewhurst will be under supervised parole for 10 years.

“The defendant took advantage of his developmentally disabled relative to sexually assault her,” said District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn. “This conduct is reprehensible and the lengthy prison sentence was more than justified.”
