Woman dead, man arrested after fatal crash in Taunton

Police say the innocent woman was getting into her car after shopping when she was hit.

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) – One man is now in custody and one woman is dead following an erratic crash involving several drugs and whiskey, Tuesday afternoon in Taunton.

Newly released court documents say the driver, 42-year-old Roland Escobar of Taunton, admitted to police at the scene he had taken ‘at least’ two shots of Fireball and oxycodone before getting behind the wheel.

Investigators say 59-year-old Lisa Rocha was getting into her car around 4:30 p.m. on Main Street after shopping, when she was hit by Escobar before he fled the scene.

That’s when investigators say Escobar hit multiple other parked cars, before his own car flipped.

Rocha was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Family telling reporters following Escobar’s arraignment, Rocha was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone and will be missed by so many.


According to the police report, Escobar told police that he ‘blacked out’ and woke up in an ambulance. The suspect told investigators the Oxycodone he consumed possibly contained fentanyl. Escobar was later arrested after being medically cleared at Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton.

He has pleaded not guilty to the following charges:

  • manslaughter
  • assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle)
  • operating while under the influence of drugs – death resulting
  • operating while under the influence of drugs – second offense
  • leaving the scene – death resulting
  • leaving the scene of property damage

The investigation remains ongoing.
