Taveras Will Be Next Mayor of Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Angel Taveras has been elected mayor of Providence and will become the first Hispanic person to lead Rhode Island's capitol city.
Taveras is an attorney and former city housing court judge. He succeeds outgoing Mayor David Cicilline, who ran for Congress.
The 40-year-old Taveras was virtually assured a win Tuesday after he won the September primary. He had no Republican opponent and a poorly funded and little-known independent, Jonathan Scott, was his only opposition.
Taveras is the son of Dominican immigrants who grew up in the city's impoverished South Side. He worked his way up from a Head Start program to Harvard and then to Georgetown University's law school.
Taveras ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1999.
