Teachers’ union backs Cianci for Providence mayor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Buddy Cianci has been endorsed by the Providence Teachers Union as he tries for a third stint as mayor, after his first two ended with felony convictions.

The 1,900-member union’s executive board threw its support to Cianci on Saturday over Democratic candidate Jorge Elorza. The union says Republican Daniel Harrop didn’t seek its endorsement for mayor.

The union says the independent Cianci clearly understands the school district’s needs.

Cianci previously was endorsed by city police and firefighters.

Cianci first won the office as a Republican in 1974 and later became an independent. He was forced out in 1984 after being convicted of assault. He won the mayor’s job again in 1990, but was out in 2002 after being convicted of racketeering conspiracy. He served 4 years in prison.
